Hi, I’m Claire — founder of multi-award-winning Your English Tutor UK, where students improve by an average of two grades in English within just 60 days.
Across my 15-year teaching career as a former Head of English, GCSE examiner, and now private tutor, I’ve helped hundreds of students build confidence, strengthen their writing, and achieve results they never thought possible.
The beginning of Your English Tutor UK
Things weren’t always this way…
In 2023, I was in my dream role as Head of English when my mum became seriously ill. I made the difficult decision to step away from the classroom to care for her, and it was during that period that Your English Tutor UK was born.
It started at my mum’s kitchen table, in between hospital appointments, tutoring students one hour at a time. At that stage, I wasn’t thinking like a business owner. I had no business experience, no grand strategy, and no idea where it would lead.
But I knew one thing for certain: there were many students searching for a level of confidence, feedback, and personalised support that can be difficult to provide in busy classrooms. Drawing on my experience as a Head of English, curriculum developer, and GCSE examiner, I wanted to build something bigger than just “hourly tutoring sessions”.
Even after losing my mum and briefly returning to teaching, there was still something inside me pushing me to build more: a complete support system that could help students all across the UK.
So, I handed in my notice and put all of my efforts into building something I was truly proud of.
Becoming the student again
I already had strong teaching expertise and continued developing my experience as a GCSE examiner each year to ensure my students always benefited from the most up-to-date insight and understanding of the curriculum.
But I also knew that building the kind of complete support system I envisioned would require an entirely new set of skills. So, I became the student again.
I invested heavily in business coaching, training, and mentorship, learning how to transform my classroom experience into far more than weekly tutoring sessions. With guidance from experienced mentors and successful business owners, I built annual programmes, a structured curriculum, online revision platform, safeguarding systems, and a learning experience designed to genuinely support students and parents.
Alongside this, I became a member of The Tutors’ Association to ensure the highest standards in safeguarding, compliance, and professional development — and in 2026, I was honoured to be shortlisted for Secondary Tutor of the Year.
From kitchen table to thriving tuition business
Before I knew it, Your English Tutor UK had grown from a small start-up at my mum’s kitchen table into a thriving tuition business supporting 45 families every single week during the 2025–26 academic year.
Parents placed their trust in me not just for weekly tutoring, but for full-year support systems designed to improve confidence, strengthen writing skills, and transform outcomes in English.
What started as a few one-to-one sessions slowly became a complete learning experience built around expert teaching, examiner feedback, structured support, and genuine relationships with students and families.
And the most rewarding part of all? Watching students who once believed they were “bad at English” begin to feel capable, confident, and proud of themselves again.
Why I believe every student can succeed
My journey taught me that success is rarely about “natural talent” alone.
It’s about having the right guidance, the right strategies, and people in your corner who truly believe in you.
My own life completely changed when I became the student again, sought out expert mentorship, and built the systems and mindset needed to turn an idea into something meaningful.
Today, I’m living my dream. It is an absolute privilege to work with incredible young people every single day and watch them grow in confidence, achieve results they never thought possible, and begin to recognise their own potential.
